The Altwiener Christkindlmarkt has been held at Freyung square since 1772. This makes it one of the oldest Christmas markets in Vienna – and it certainly is one of the most festive. Besides its beautiful selection of arts and crafts, including ceramics, traditional nativity scenes and tree ornaments, the market also offers seasonal specialities to please your palate. Christmas music and artisanal demonstrations will round out your visit to this cosy Christmas market.

The little white market stands at the K.u.k. Weihnachtsmarkt at Michaelerplatz in front of Hofburg Palace feature a wide selection of products from Austrian manufacturers, including sweets, tin figures, handmade nativity scenes and lots more.

This little Christmas market of 15 stands is a fantastic find for foodies, with gourmet products such as cheese and wine, meats and sausages, or marzipan and nougat as well as Austrian specialities and hot punch. The glass roof provides a welcome shield from the winter weather and the elegant Ringstraßen-Galerien shopping mall isn’t far either.

The artisan market at Karlsplatz isn’t just over-the-top creative, it is also 100 % organic: all culinary offerings are from certified organic sources. Now that’ll make the punch taste even better! There’s plenty to buy and plenty to see, with more than 70 artisans and makers of music instruments, jewellery, woodcarvings, wool fashions and lots more. Children will love the piles of hay in which to play – not to mention the sheep petting area.

The Christmas Village on the Campus of the University of Vienna is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
