The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is a city-state as well as the second-largest city of Germany.
Hamburg is located in the north of the country where the rivers Bille and Alster discharge into the Elbe. A major seafaring hub, the city is also dubbed "the gateway to the world". According to the latest figures (2011), Hamburg's population amounts to 1,789,529 inhabitants.
The River Elbe invites visitors to the harbour area to either indulge in extensive strolls or join a harbour tour followed by a walk through the old storehouse district. At just a short distance, the Reeperbahn, which is also known as the world's most sinful mile, opens its gates to a most colourful and fancy world. Situated directly along the Alster, the Jungfernstieg boulevard is the ideal place to go for food and shopping since it is lined with numerous restaurants and well-known designer boutiques.
