Berlin is the capital and biggest city of Germany with almost 3.500.000 inhabitants (2010) and an area of 891 km2 (344.02 sq mi). The city is located in the eastern part of Germany, about 70 km (43.50 mi) west of Poland. The rivers Havel, Dahme and Spree run through Berlin. It is an important european traffic hub and one of the most visited cities of Europe
Berlin is a cosmopolitan city known for its culture, politics, media and sciences. Berlin is home to many famous buildings and monuments, like the Siegessäule, the Brandenburger Tor, the Reichstag and the boulevard Unter den Linden, as well as to renowned universities, research institutions and museums.
The thriving, dynamic and diverse nightlife, artistic scenes and living styles of Berlin are legendary all over the world.
Berlin was divided into West and East Berlin after World War II. After the German reunification in1989, the wall was torn down and Berlin became the capital city of Germany – a historical event with worldwide significance.
