Vienna is the capital of Austria and with a population of about 1.7 million by far the largest urban area.
It is located in the east of Austria and is surrounded by the province of Lower Austria. Vienna is a year-round destination with a busy cultural calendar and numerous sights to visit.
Most of the main sights are located within or close to the Ring Boulevard which circles the city center. These include the Austrian Parliament, The Imperial Palace, the State Opera House, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Natural Historical Museum.
One of Vienna's most famous sights is St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom), located right in the heart of the city centre. The adjacent Kärtnerstraße and Graben are two of the most prestigious shopping streets.
One of the most popular attractions is Schönbrunn Palace, embedded in a large park area, which is also home to the oldest zoo in the world.
Other points of interest include:
- Sisi Museum – The highlights are numerous of personal objects once owned by Empress Elisabeth.
- Spanish Riding School: with its popular Lipizan ballet. Can be experienced live in the baroque ambiance of the Imperial Palace.
- MAK – Museum for Applied Arts: The museum shows textiles, glass and furniture from the Middle Ages to the present.
