Perched on the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain is Medvedgrad Castle, which originally served to protect against attacks by the Turks. Medvedgrad has an important role in Zagreb’s history, and is the scene for many local legends.

The historical Lotrščak defence tower, built in the 13th century, offers stunning views over Zagreb. But be aware: As part of a centuries-old tradition, a cannon is fired from the tower every day at 12.00. The best way to reach the tower is via the funicular railway.
